How to Create Organic Ambient Instruments in Ableton Live

Ableton Live

I’m in the process of composing an ambient track that’s been bouncing around in my head for a couple of months.

Yesterday, I spent 2-hours testing out a bunch of ‘presets’ (in Massive) to include in it. I listened back to the work today and went ‘meh’.

Today, I spent 2-hours learning how to make uber-cool organic pads using samples of common instruments.

I haven’t recorded anything with these yet, but I am newly inspired and picked up a great technique in the process.

That makes for a good day.

Ave Maria (Schubert) – Piano and Flute

The-Blessed-Virgin-Mary

Bit of an experiment. I’ve always loved this song. Found an incredibly well-performed MIDI file and tweaked it in Ableton Live.

Too much DeadMau5

Been listening to a lot of electronica lately, and I enjoy DeadMau5. I’m still learning how to use Ableton Live and decided to try out some DeadMau5-ish ideas. I specifically wanted to try using sidechain compression. The trick is probably over-used at this point, but it’s still fun.

So, this is more of an experiment really…
